also, bny mellon works with other financial companies/businesses that's probably why you have never heard of them. at first, i thought it was scam but i did more research and called the company.
Report by gigglez Long ago Unknown
it's not a scam. you have to type http://partner.consumerinfo.com/alerts to enroll and use your activation code from the letter. it's not www.partner.consumerinfo.com/alerts. use the http address.

Letter dated 9/15/08 says have 90 days to activate.  This a jt tentant account through Ameritrade where some stocks have been bought.  No idea the Honda part of this?  Do presently have credit monitoring set up. I guess I'll wait and listen to feed back on this before I do anything.

Just go to Google and search for BNY.The search will reveal BNY Mellon's website.Click on it.The BNY Mellon homepage will come up.In the search box on the top right type in "tape".On the new page that will come up for your search of their website, the very first one listed wil be titled "Additional Information on Shareowners Services Incident".Click on those words. On the next page that comes up,in the top right corner, you will see the "Enroll Now for the free 24 month....".Click on the words "Enroll Now".The next page will come up and you can start enrolling in the monitoring service. There will be a place to use you free activation code on the page after you fill out your name,address,e-mail,etc..Easy as pie.And it's free! They have plenty of offers and opportunities to spend you hard earned money on other things at this monitoring service, like credit scores etc...But you don't have to spend anything. The monitoring service is free!! Hope this helps all of you! P.S. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.Take it.They scewed up.Use it. See ya ,Greg

Consumers Confused Over Letters from BNY Mellon Shareowner Services9/19/2008Consumers Confused Over Letters fromBNY Mellon Shareowner ServicesContact:Sue McConnellV.P., PR & Marketing216.623.8964 x 109sue@cleveland.bbb.orgFor Immediate Release – September 16, 2008 – BBB staff is busy answering calls today from local residents who are concerned about notices they received which indicate their Social Security numbers and other personal information may be at risk. The notice from BNY Mellon Shareowner Services states that computer tapes containing this information were lost while being transported to an off-site archive storage facility. The letter also contains offers for 24 months of free credit monitoring, identity theft insurance and reimbursement for the costs of a credit report freeze and removal. A toll free phone number is provided for more information as well as links to web sites. One woman’s comments were typical of those voiced by other consumers. “I thought this might be a scam,” she told the BBB. “I was afraid to call the toll free number and give them any information. I thought they might be trying to get my name and other things.” Another said she was concerned because, “I had no idea who the company was and the date I got the letter in the mail was the same date the letter was written. Those two things raised red flags for me.”The BBB has confirmed that the letters are legitimate. Recipients are confused because they don’t recall ever doing business with BNY Mellon Shareowner Services. The reason? BNY Mellon Shareholder Services performs services on behalf of other companies. Their clients include issuers of securities, such as publicly held corporations. They also administer employee stock option plans. BNY Mellon Shareowner Services is mailing millions of similar letters across the country. BBBNY Mellon Shareowner Services spokesperson, Kevin Heine, told the BBB, “While there has been no indication that the data on the lost tapes has been misused in any way, we are offering comprehensive fraud protection to all affected individuals as a precaution.” The company has posted more information at www.bnymellon.com/tapequery. “Consumers who called us to check on this mailing were wise,” said BBB president, David Weiss. “While this mailing turned out to be legitimate, the BBB is seeing an increase in attempts to gather private information that can be used as identity theft tools.” There are many ways to reduce your risk of identity theft. One step is to shred documents that contain personal information. The BBB is hosting a free document shredding event as part of the national “BBB Secure Your ID Day” this weekend. I received the letter and I have investments with Mellon. I did not suspect in any way this was not legitimate until I could not access the website www.partner.consumerinfo.com/alert That is when I found this website. I also visited www.bnymellon.com/tapequery which also looks like legitimate info from Mellon. I am a little confused on this issue and don't want to get caught up in any scam. Have anyone had success receiving this credit monitoring?
Report by Candi Long ago Unknown
I received a letter also and I was suspect because I didn't work for Honda and the expiration date of the offer was the same date I received this letter.  However, that night my local news station aired a story about the stole tapes and it affecting hundreds of South Dakotans.  The next day, I spoke to my work since it was their stock that Mellon handles and they said it was legit.  I was still questioning it cause of Honda wondering if maybe there are also fake letters going out.  I followed a link on the local news station story and found a number to call.  The letter is legit, they apologized for having the wrong employer on there.  I got my activation code and I registered for the free credit monitoring.  Yes, obviously I did need to give my SSN to register for the credit report monitoring however considering the research I did and the route I took to contact them I am confident its not a scam.  I have included the link to the news story as well as a FAQ for mellon (I called the number on the bottom).  You can also just google BNY Mellon and get a number that way.  Hope this helps.  http://keloland.com/NewsDetail6162.cfm?ID=0,73701  http://www.bnymellon.com/tapequery/

i rec'd the same letter. i am quite upset about this but my wife is probably madder because i will not let it go and have been calling every one i can think of to vent. was there a number with capital letters to the top and right of your name and address and just above a bar code?i have called mellon bank in canada 1-877-576-4968 and brian said the number(if there) is legit  1-877-278-3461. i have called AG nys in rochester ny, i have called troweprice i have called kodak, who could care less. i signed up for the triplealert thru experian, probably the onewho started this hysteria.

My wife and I also got this letter (separately). We have no association with Honda or ADR. We only have one account with Chase with both our names.  All my searches shows the numbers listed 877-278-3461 as unknown. The number for Experian 866-926-9805 is also listed as unknown.

I also just got this in the mail today. I think this is strange as well b/c I don't have anything with JPMorgan Chase Bank and I have never worked for Honda. I do own a Honda but this does not sound like anything to do with Honda owners. Mine says that I have until today, Sept 9, 2008 to call for the free credit service and the letter is dated August 27th. It also states that I should have rec'd another letter with a unique code on it to activate the free monitoring which I NEVER got. This sounds fishy to me.

I got one of the letters with both JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. and Honda at the top.  It referenced another letter that I supposedly got (but not really) from BNY Mellon Shareowner Services.  Like all the rest of you, my personal info has supposedly been lost, but I have never been an employee of Honda or and ADR stock holder.  The number that was in my letter to call for info was 1-877-278-3461.  This is the number that directs you hit option 1 if you received a letter.  After several tries I got through.  The person I spoke to couldn't tell me why my name was on the list, but after giving her my name and the last 3 digits of my SS#, she gave me the activation code and a number to call Experian to register (1-866-579-4461).  I wasn't able to get through though--I kept getting the message that because of high call volume they couldn't take my call and to try later.  After reading all these other posts though, I think the whole thing is a scam.

A man from this office called my parents home looking for me (even though I haven't lived there in over 16 years) He told my mom & my sister that my social security number was associated with contract fraud and that me and my dad need to call him immediately. If I did actually owe someone or there was a problem, my dad wouldn't have anything to do with it considering I'm 38 years and my dad hasn't had anything to do with any loan or contracts of mine in at least 18 years. Regardless whether this is something that I really owe or not, telling my family anything about it is violation of the FDCPA.

I had an $11 charge on 12/26 on my credit card from BLACKLACE DESIGN 717-798-8238 PA .  CapitalOne instantly called, texted, and e-mailed me to notify me of questionable charges on my account.  What great service by CapitalOne Visa, as it seems like they have tagged these guys as fraudulant.  Just hope they go after them.
