This number called my phone last night leaving a message that if I did'nt return the call I would be put in jail.  Yeah, right.  Tired of scammers.

Guy is calling my 15 year old granddaughter's phone repeatedly. When she ignores the calls he leaves messages...sounding threatening, almost yelling, telling her NOT to ignore the calls and if she does he feels sorry for her for the consequences. This has my granddaughter freaked out. He called from 567-248-4831 but left 567-248-5042 as a callback number. I called both, got a recording saying enter the telephone number starting w/the area code, just like I had not dialed a number.

Report by Creeped Out! Long ago Unknown
I got a call from this number at work and the guy was seriously creepy. He called asking for a Christopher someone and when I told him the office was closed he told me I sounded like Angelina Jolie and I have a cute smile and continued to ask me if he could take me out on a date, I tried to be nice and professional and told him I'm already taken and he said I was breaking his heart and that he would send me a limo and take me out to dinner. After I continued to turn down his advances he asked me if we could have sex, at which point i said no and hung up on him. He sounded like a creepy indian guy.

Report by Ally DeSantis Long ago Unknown
Called my fiance' and told him he owed $1000 and if he didn't make a minimum balance of $200 he'd be both arrested and have him boss called. Implied that he'd both be fired and go to jail. And for the icing on the cake he has 4 hrs to decide or he WILL be arrested on the spot by local cops. The funny thing is he "put him on hold" and my fiance could hear him clearly change his voice and then pretend to be yet another person. The F@*$ed up part is he was at work on duty and they kept calling till he picked up and this crap happened.
Report by ejae Long ago Unknown
I received the call also.  And you know it's some BS cause when you call back you get a busy signal.  The next time they call have someone who can pose or have a real lawyer standing by, and put them on the line.  I bet they'll stop calling then.

Said I owed someone money and was going to be arrested for internet fraud.  Would not identify the party to whom I supposedly owed the money.  Oh, and strangely, no one that has called me can even speach English.  Really!  I do wish this type of fraud, abuse, and quite frankly harassment could be stopped.  Anyone have any relatives in DC?
Report by DRyan Long ago Unknown
Just want to let you know, it's a scam! These people seem to be calling from all around the USA, but they are based in India. Don't let them scare you, you cannot be arrested for a collection account. I have received a call in the past and had them reported to the FTC. Also let your local police dept know about the threats. It seems they've scammed millions out of Americans and NBC and ABC news have done reports on this scam. If they call again, threaten them back! They will stop the calls after you confront them.

Thanks James & SecurityI just started getting calls from this odd unknown number last week. Thing is those idiots are calling on our business line. Which as a local operation we don't market nor service that area code so as to not waste production time they get channeled to VM to state their case.So out of curiosity I started looking the number up on the net and presto. I'm not surprised to now find they're attempted scammers that's to remain on the ignore list just as suspected. They'll certainly not be wasting Barb or any of the rest of the call receptionists time with simpleton BS. Thing was they would never leave a message and now I know why. Because they're some hapless time wasting frauds just like we'd already suspected they were. Our business isn't making millions but we're doing more than well enough to stay plenty busy. Which we've got and keep it that way by taking various effective measures to have nothing to do with worthless would be thieves.

I have been receiving calls from this number daily. I called once to remove my number because they were calling for someone who no longer has my number (I get several calls a day for this person). Then I just called again because they continue calling me, and I told the representative to remove my number because this is getting ridiculous, and he said "so, why should I remove your number?" And I said "because the person you're looking for no longer has this number", so he says "what do you say? and i kept saying excuse me, and he kept saying "what do you say", then said "what do you say when you want something done?" and i said please ,and he said "ok, removed, bye"there has to be a way to report this to the authorities.

as someone mentioned it is they way these people operate. scare tactics. maybe out of 30 calls they may get someone to freak out and cough up something they may not owe. Realistically too, if you had the money you would have paid them. you cannot give them what you do not haveI do not know if any readers have ever gone to court with the likes of these people. I answered a judgment about a $200 bill i forgot about -because i was in a coma in hospital for 6 weeks. The firm was billing me $900. I took my bill, said look this is what i owe, this is what i will pay (over time) and if necessary we could go in front of the judge. they backed down, agreed, and i ended up paying it off much the way i would have paid the original debt to sears. THEY MADE NO MONEY on it HA HA!I do not know where these people recruit, they have bitter mean people on the phone and lawyers who must have been bottom of their class at school

Just got a call from caller id #203-1290.  Pushed 1 for English and after long while "Fred" came on asked how he can help me.  I told I had no idea since HE called me and I did not know who he was.  He proceeded to ask to speak to Mr. F, whose name is close to but not mine, and asked if he was home or if that was me.  When I told him that my name was close, but not right and again asked who he was to try and figure out if he wanted me or someone else, he said I was rude and hung up.  Gotta love these morons.  If it was a legit collection call for a debt I owed, no reason NOT to identify yourself.  Fact that the company is not identified, nor is the debt until AFTER they gather whatever info they can tells you it is bogus call.I generally just hang up, but actually enjoy playing with them from time to time.  If you do too, have fun. If you don't, just hang up.  No worries either way.

lamet-most of your information is correct. However, a person's request for validation is not limited to within the first 30 days after the debt collector first sends their dunning letter stating you have 30 days to respond. If you read the applicable law, it only states that 30 days after the initial letter, the debt collector may consider it valid. Just because the debt collector considers it valid does not make it so. You can request validation at any time that you first become aware of the debt. Unless the debt collector has a signed return receipt confirmation showing you received such contact, no time frame is valid. You might run your credit reports and find debts listed you know nothing about. You can request validation at that point. Or you might not be aware of said debt until you are actually served with a summons and complaint to appear in court. You can request validation during those proceedings. And if you handle your requests in a certain manner, you could even turn the table on the debt collector and sue them for fraudulent credit reporting and/or debt collection practices. An excellent website which has a wealth of information on debt collection and credit reporting in plain english, as well as explaining exactly how to proceed with debt validation is located here:http://www.creditinfocenter.com/rebuild/debt_validation.shtml

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.Under the FDCPA, a debt collector is someone who regularly collects debts owed to others. This includes collection agencies, lawyers who collect debts on a regular basis, and companies that buy delinquent debts and then try to collect them. Here are some questions and answers about your rights under the Act.What types of debts are covered? The Act covers personal, family, and household debts, including money you owe on a personal credit card account, an auto loan, a medical bill, and your mortgage. The FDCPA doesn’t cover debts you incurred to run a business. Can a debt collector contact me any time or any place? No. A debt collector may not contact you at inconvenient times or places, such as before 8 in the morning or after 9 at night, unless you agree to it. And collectors may not contact you at work if they’re told (orally or in writing) that you’re not allowed to get calls there. How can I stop a debt collector from contacting me?If a collector contacts you about a debt, you may want to talk to them at least once to see if you can resolve the matter – even if you don’t think you owe the debt, can’t repay it immediately, or think that the collector is contacting you by mistake. If you decide after contacting the debt collector that you don’t want the collector to contact you again, tell the collector – in writing – to stop contacting you. Here’s how to do that:Make a copy of your letter. Send the original by certified mail, and pay for a “return receipt” so you’ll be able to document what the collector received. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again, with two exceptions: a collector can contact you to tell you there will be no further contact or to let you know that they or the creditor intend to take a specific action, like filing a lawsuit. Sending such a letter to a debt collector you owe money to does not get rid of the debt, but it should stop the contact. The creditor or the debt collector still can sue you to collect the debt. Can a debt collector contact anyone else about my debt?If an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you. If you don’t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people – but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney. What does the debt collector have to tell me about the debt? Every collector must send you a written “validation notice” telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don’t think you owe the money. Can a debt collector keep contacting me if I don’t think I owe any money? If you send the debt collector a letter stating that you don’t owe any or all of the money, or asking for verification of the debt, that collector must stop contacting you. You have to send that letter within 30 days after you receive the validation notice. But a collector can begin contacting you again if it sends you written verification of the debt, like a copy of a bill for the amount you owe. What practices are off limits for debt collectors?Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:     use threats of violence or harm;     publish a list of names of people who refuse to pay their debts (but they can give this information to the credit reporting companies);     use obscene or profane language; or     repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone. False statements. Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives;     falsely claim that you have committed a crime;     falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;     misrepresent the amount you owe;     indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they aren’t; or     indicate that papers they send to you aren’t legal forms if they are. Debt collectors also are prohibited from saying that:     you will be arrested if you don’t pay your debt;     they’ll seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages unless they are permitted by law to take the action and intend to do so; or     legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don’t intend to take the action. Debt collectors may not:     give false credit information about you to anyone, including a credit reporting company;     send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency if it isn’t; or     use a false company name. Unfair practices. Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. For example, they may not:     try to collect any interest, fee, or other charge on top of the amount you owe unless the contract that created your debt – or your state law – allows the charge;     deposit a post-dated check early;     take or threaten to take your property unless it can be done legally; or     contact you by postcard. Can I control which debts my payments apply to? Yes. If a debt collector is trying to collect more than one debt from you, the collector must apply any payment you make to the debt you select. Equally important, a debt collector may not apply a payment to a debt you don’t think you owe.Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages? If you don’t pay a debt, a creditor or its debt collector generally can sue you to collect. If they win, the court will enter a judgment against you. The judgment states the amount of money you owe, and allows the creditor or collector to get a garnishment order against you, directing a third party, like your bank, to turn over funds from your account to pay the debt. Wage garnishment happens when your employer withholds part of your compensation to pay your debts. Your wages usually can be garnished only as the result of a court order. Don’t ignore a lawsuit summons. If you do, you lose the opportunity to fight a wage garnishment. Can federal benefits be garnished? Many federal benefits are exempt from garnishment, including:     Social Security Benefits     Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits     Veterans’ Benefits     Civil Service and Federal Retirement and Disability Benefits     Service Members’ Pay     Military Annuities and Survivors’ Benefits     Student Assistance     Railroad Retirement Benefits     Merchant Seamen Wages     Longshoremen’s and Harbor Workers’ Death and Disability Benefits     Foreign Service Retirement and Disability Benefits     Compensation for Injury, Death, or Detention of Employees of U.S. Contractors Outside the U.S.     Federal Emergency Management Agency Federal Disaster Assistance But federal benefits may be garnished under certain circumstances, including to pay delinquent taxes, alimony, child support, or student loans. Do I have any recourse if I think a debt collector has violated the law? You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. If you win, the judge can require the collector to pay you for any damages you can prove you suffered because of the illegal collection practices, like lost wages and medical bills. The judge can require the debt collector to pay you up to $1,000, even if you can’t prove that you suffered actual damages. You also can be reimbursed for your attorney’s fees and court costs. A group of people also may sue a debt collector as part of a class action lawsuit and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector’s net worth, whichever amount is lower. Even if a debt collector violates the FDCPA in trying to collect a debt, the debt does not go away if you owe it.What should I do if a debt collector sues me?If a debt collector files a lawsuit against you to collect a debt, respond to the lawsuit, either personally or through your lawyer, by the date specified in the court papers to preserve your rights. Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General’s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.For More InformationTo learn more about debt collection and other credit-related issues, visit www.ftc.gov/credit and MyMoney.gov, the U.S. government’s portal to financial education. The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. Got a call from a woman asking for a male name.  I'm a female living alone. The bizarre thing is that my maiden name is the same as the (very common) last name of the person she was looking for.  When I told her she had the wrong number, she didn't believe me. Actually said that it was "obvious" because of my last name being the same as his (even though I'm listed by my former married name, which is NOT the same as the person she was looking for).  How she got that information is highly suspicious, especially since I live alone and my listed name would NOT be the one she is looking for.  When I reiterated that I was not that person, she yelled "LADY, PUT HIM ON THE PHONE!".  I told her that's impossible since I don't know him, and I've had this number for years.  She called me a B*tch and while I was hanging up, I heard her say "I'm dialing you back Lady".  I heard beeps, hung up, and she called right back, although I didn't answer.

lamet-most of your information is correct.

Anyone who receives harrassing phone calls from either telemarketers or collection agencies should report them to the Federal Trade Commission.  Trust me once you file a report with the FTA, you'll never hear from these idiots again.  The FTC does not condone this kind harrassment to the community, they always get their job done.

I received this same call today.  The caller sounded very unprofessional so I thought it was a scam.  I called my local H&R Block office, and it was legitimate.  My tax preparer said it appears someone has stolen my identity.  She and I completed my returns last night, and she said she had a message this morning when she got to work that someone had already used my social security number for a tax return.  She will resubmit tonight to see if there is a glitch.  If so, everything should go through properly tonight, and she will call me first thing tomorrow morning.  If not, I will have to go downtown to the IRS Department to work through this issue.  She said it's happening more and more.  The fraudulent person picks a social security number at random, enters his/her information (other than the SSN), and when the return is processed, the money inadvertently gets channeled into their checking account rather than the real taxpayer's account.  This could be bad...
