Yeah, same story as above. This guy with a heavy Indian accent. Its the second call I've received in the last month. I called him on it the first time and told him he was an absolute scam artist and cut out the s%^t. Then 3 weeks later he calls again, so I played along for a few minutes asking dumb questions to see what he would say. The thing is with these idiots they will eventually find someone to prey upon. Hopefully, this helps to raise awareness.

Asked for the number and then looked it up... it was coming up as unavailable on my call display, seemed a little fishy.

My call came from a guy with a heavy Indian accent saying he was from Windows Service Center in Toronto.  He gave me his phone number which was 122 6777 0328.  Said he could fix all the spam coming into my computer ( I had just installed a Windows program).  I said I'd check into it and call him back.  I found this site which says others have also been contacted.  On checking Google, I find that many people have been contacted but it says it is a SCAM.  Windows does not make unsolicited calls to your home, you have to contact them if there is a problem.

I got a call from this number at 5:30 pm jan 14, 2012. Same message About windows, but he used the name martin ranger. Same heavy indianAccent. I told him no thanks.
Report by Marc Long ago Unknown
I got the same call from the same Indian guy (Mark with a K !). The phone number to call back was the same 1-226-777-0328. He is very motivated to get the control of the computer. That's the fifth time they (or he) try to contact me ... He reached me on May 5th at 11h30 am in Halifax, CanadaHere is his storyFirst step : look at the "ID". He asks you to push on the flag and R at the same time. He then asks you to type CMD and click OK. A old micrsosoft windows black screen is there. He then ask you to write assoc then push enter. He read you the last line next to CLSID to prove you that he is a genuine Window service online technician. He reads out 888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062. This number is not unique. It will be on most computers, maybe unique to Vista, but they have already confirmed that you are running Vista. So if they spell out 888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062 to you, do not be surprised, as lots of people, if not all Vista users, have a CLSID of 888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062 Second step: look at the "malwares". He ask you to repeat the flag and R sequence and then you type eventwvr to see the bad enemies in your computers. You click on windows logs and then on application and he asks you to tell him how many red and yellow error messages you got  ... for me they were all related to my printer and honestly didn't look like bad stuff.Third step: Catch the fish: He asks you to do again the fancy flag and R and then type www.support.me. He says that a technician is generating a login code just for you. This is where my story stops ... I'm not that dumb ! I don't want to know what happens next !!!Please don't try to go further !Enjoy you microsoft window, even if it looks like it's not functioning perfectly well!Marc (with a C)

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

I received this call at 5:30pm local time in Nova Scotia.  The caller said he was calling from Windows Service Dept. and that my computer was gathering "bugs", etc.  He asked me to start up the computer and he could tell me how to reverse or clear the problem.  I told him it would be impossible for me to do that at this moment and wanted to scream "SCAM" at him.  He gave me his return number and name - Mark Watson (in a very heavy indian accent).

They can call me every day for years and talk to my machine all they want if that is what they are compelled to do with their lives. It doesn't bother me at all. What's with all of these thin skinned easily irritated people anyway? Too many food additives? It takes no more effort to erase their messages than it does to erase any others and I can do it at the same time for efficiency. I will never bother to expend the effort to talk to them and I will never, ever send them a dime for a debt, whether legitimate or not-- Just because they are who they are. If they sue me, I fight them tooth and nail all the way through court with free legal aid, forcing them to waste more time and money. Then I continue to not pay them, in peace and tranquility. If everyone did that, they’d all go out of business. I am the rock upon which they beat themselves bloody. Love to all...

only in america what has this world become. looking out for a fast buck and taking no responsibility for actions.  the best thing to do in dealing w/ a debt collector is to get specific info and always provided good, specific documentation when disputing a bal owed/ but above all if there is just some outside chance that you do owe the money make payments as quickly as possible and payoff asap/ sitting idly by not making cont w/ the collector only makes things worse/ fact is the debt probable wasn't already handled in the best manner if you are already in collection. work w/ the debtor whether you owe it or not.not dealing w/ it only looks like your running from the debt

This is my third and last posting. I just e-mailed Penn (see previous posting for their e-mail address), after receiving another one of their automated messages on my answering machine. Feel free to copy and paste this from an anonymous e-mail address to e-mail your warning to them:My name is xxxxx at xxx-xxx-xxxx. (Real name and number was given to them.) You have called my home repeatedly with automated messages. Your messages, that often are left on my answering machine, claim that you are a collection agency. You do not identify whom you represent, and through your automated methods, are circumventing my opportunity to warn you about the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.  Since you have been harassing me for months, using circumvention, I am warning you now. You are not to call my home for ANY reason. If you do, I will alert your State Attorney General to your tactics.  S/he will receive a link to this website, http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-900-1380#pdJBhBsywLgDXogjLKhxjSQ that attests to your tactics as described by multiple victims.  I speak for them as well as myself. You have the right to contact unknowledgeable consumers if lawful; however, I am not one of those unknowledgeable consumers. You are on notice, as of the reception of this message, that further telephonic contact will be reported to your SAG. S/he will receive my written complaint, a copy of this notice and a link to the aforementioned website as evidence.Cease and desist or further action will be taken.

Here I am again adding to the comment I just made about the FCRA...Penn has a site ~  E-mail them at inquiries@penncredit.com...Follow my instructions about the FCRA threat. Go ahead and leave the name they address you by and your phone number so they know who you are. I suggest you use www.nowmymail.com from which to send your message. On that site you can sign up for a temporary e-mail address so you won't get return mail from Penn. Threaten them with their State Attorney General, then have a nice day!

But when a collector keeps calling for someone that does not live at your address and you don't even know, it is harrassment on their part. And even when it is a bs call that should not be made because the number is on and has been on the Do Not Call registry for many yrs. So when I tell them that they need to stop calling for those reasons and they keep calling anyway, I will report them for harrassment.

800-900-1380

The big problem with this caller is that I answer the phone all the time and there is no one there.  I have no problem with them trying to collect a legitimate debt from someone, and am sure it isn't mine, but I want to know what debt it is and whose debt it is.   Another reason I answer is to inform them, if there is actually anyone on the line,  that I don't want to receive any more calls from them and furthermore that I recently purchased a dandy little item called a Screecher and the next live person who calls from their company will probably lose the hearing in one ear.  I know that would be illegal, but wouldn't it be great to get this whole thing out in court for everyone to see how these firms work, and I'm sure if there are any members of the jury who receive these types of calls I will be acquitted.

As a debt collector, I was curious as to what was said about collectors on the internet. You do NOT tell a company you want to cease communication, companies want it in writing."CEASING COMMUNICATION.  If a consumer notifies a debt collector in writing that the consumer refuses to pay a debt or that the consumer wishes the debt collector to cease further communication with the consumer, the debt collector shall not communicate further with the consumer with respect to such debt, except—(1) to advise the consumer that the debt collector’s further efforts are being terminated; (2) to notify the consumer that the debt collector or creditor may invoke specified remedies which are ordinarily invoked by such debt collector or creditor;" I know this because not only do I know the law, I was tested on it MULTIPLE times. Also, if we DON'T KNOW that we're contacting a family member, how are we supposed to stop? As far as we know, we're contacting the debtor. A tip for a debtor: We're only allowed to have contact (this includes knowing we're talking to the correct person by verifying a name plus another form of identification) once every three (or five?) days. We work on an automatic dialer and the dialer does that sort of work.

@Trying, You're obviously a very responsible person. I am not. If things don't go well for me, I don't pay, simple as that. I'm not going to hurt for them! And I don't lose any sleep over it or even allow myself to get upset. The primary money grubber doesn't give a damn about me and the scum sucking collection jackals for sure couldn't care less about my situation and what I have to go through. So I don't give a damn about them either or give them a second thought.  I am their worst nightmare. They can only get a hook into your flesh if you care. If you care, you are vulnerable to their BS. I do not. I screen all calls and don't even waste my time answering and being manipulated by these low-lifes. This is their problem having the job that they do. They are probably paying a stiff karmic debt themselves...  :) If they sue me, I fight them with free legal aid. If they win, I still will not pay. When I get back on my feet, I will pay legitimate creditors but I never pay Debt Collectors- ever. They are Vultures with blood all over their faces and I will not dignify their existence with a single cent of my money. You are a good person, 'Trying’. Don't feel guilty and don't get upset. It is a weakness and makes you vulnerable to the parasites. Just know in truth that you are better than you even think you are, do your best, then just forget about these bastages. The best defense is to simply ignore them... :)

I've told 2 companies that I haven't been able to work for 2 years due to progressive health problems still not under control and have since applied to disability and that I was NOT trying to get out of paying my debts but just have to wait until receive disability and actually have a pay check or disability check to make any payments. It's really hard with only hubby's paycheck with a pay cut to keep his job to pay everything. They still keep calling and harrassing. I told them what do you think you can get out of 'nothing?' I have sold everything I can sell to pay off some debts and still have 2 left. Those 2 will just have to wait. I have a hearing coming up on ss and no, I am not one of those deadbeats who won't work; I have worked since I was 13 years old and buying my own school clothes/stereo equip/and other personal items. I have paid into ss all my life. They just don't 'get it.' I finally told them, you'll have to wait until I hear from ss or sue me. If you sue me, you will get nothing. There's nothing left to get. THIS is harrassment. They can check with drs and the ss to see I am NOT lying about any of this, so why do they continue? ONE day THEY themselves will see hardship and they will get theirs.

Dee Dee - I just wanted to thank you for the information on how I can stop these phone calls.  I'm unemployed and I guess they know this as my phone rings constantly ALL day and it didn't do that while I was working as one of my phones has caller ID and keeps the number until I delete it and there were NEVER any calls on my phone then. Thanks and believe you me, I will let them know that I WILL contact the FCRA  &  SAG and report them.  Thanks again!!!

I'll be rude to anyone I want to who solicits my phone number that I pay for and chooses to call me with their sneaky crap, which is always rude.Until you pay my phone bill don't tell me how to talk to callers from numbers that don't provide caller ID  along with a name in hopes they get some sucker to pick it up and exploit information out of them.If you call my house and I quickly determine whats going is some form or scam on be ready for some rough talk about your Mom or sisters private parts. There are proper channels and procedure to go through legally to locate someone who has defaulted and there are also time limits on collections with most original lenders act on before the SOL expires .... and there are more boiler room junk collectors then anything.  But that cost more money then the low wage call center job and the flunky making the calls bothering people.

Absolutely. You need to get a consumer law attorney and sue them for repeatedly ignoring your requests to validate the debt:Section 809(a) requires a collector, within 5 days of the first communication, to provide the consumer a written notice (if not provided in that communication) containing (1) the amount of the debt and--(2) the name of the creditor, along with a statement that he will (3) assume the debt's validity unless the consumer disputes it within 30 days, (4) send a verification or copy of the judgment if the consumer timely disputes the debt, and --(5) identify the original creditor upon written request. http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/rules/validating-debts-9.html#1

BS, I have a collector trying to collect on a PREPAID credit card that I closed after I spent MY money from over 10 years ago.  I have never given this number to them to call me on.  I have been married for 8 years and they are asking for me by my married name.  I have sent letter upon letter with return receipt requested that I do not owe this money and they will not stop.  Doesn't that violate some fair reporting act of some kind, be it credit or debt collecting?  I told them last night when they called and tonight they hung up on me.  When does it end???

OMG - this is the same problem I am have from this same number: 800-900-1380. a year os so ago they would call 2-3 times a day. Answered 1 time and they asked if this was (last name) residence - I said yes how can I help you. They said the were looking for Betty or Richard (last name). I told them there is no one living here by that name and asked them to stop calling. Then all of a sudden we are getting calls from the same number - 800-900-1380-  for the same reason looking for a Karen (last name). Again - no and please stop calling this number. It wasnt 15 mins later they called again. I believe they get all the last names from the national directory and just start calling numbers with the same last name in a given area  looking for a specific person. How do we stop this insidious harassment? It seems to be a lot from the same number.

@collector who said: "Don't get rude with someone from a collection agency calling if it's a wrong number, it's not our fault, we were given the number by the person we are trying to contact" Utter BS. This one particular company 800-900-1380 calls me PERIODICALLY. My wife and I are listed in the phone book as "D and M LastName". Well this credit company, and I'm sure others, see this and fish for someone they have a debt on, because I get calls from them asking for a MELISSA Lastname, or MARK LastName...neither of which are my wife or I. So clearly NOBODY gave them the number, they are on a fishing expedition.

These businesses like credit companies all use other family members info to try to track you down. They will even try contacting an ex spouse, children, moms, dads, grandparents, neighbors or anyone else they think will give them the info they are looking for. They will use 'find anyone' companies and give any and all info they currently know or have on you. Even though you might have been divorced for decades........they still have your name also and probably think you might still know how to reach the ex or know the whereabouts of them. These companies are like the IRS; if someone says you died; they'll hire someone to dig your grave up and do DNA to prove it. Not joking either.

I have to disagree with your comment stating the collection agency wouldn't be calling unless the person they are trying to contact gave you the number. I've had a collection agency (not this one) call my ex-husband who I've been divorced from for over 20yrs insisting I lived there. Not only did I not give them that number, but he had only been living in that state for a couple of years.

I am a collection agent and have been on the receiving end of collection calls so I'm not judging anyone, I understand times get hard but as far as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, that has nothing to do with demanding that someone stop calling you. If you are going to give advise to people about how to handle their debt or people calling about debt at least reference back to the correct guidelines which would be the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act or FDCPA. And you do have the right to request that someone stop calling you, but you do have to follow any verbal request to cease calls in writing within 10 days of the verbal request and I would suggest mailing with return receipt requested. AND FOR ANYONE THAT WANTS TO SAY I WORK FOR THE COMPANY CALLING, I DON'T AND NEVER HAVE. I WORK IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STATE FOR A TOTALLY UNRELATED COMPANY BUT 800-900-1380 CALLED OUR OFFICE NUMBER LOOKING FOR SOMEONE THAT APPARENTLY USE TO HAVE THIS NUMBER. Don't get rude with someone from a collection agency calling if it's a wrong number, it's not our fault, we were given the number by the person we are trying to contact and chances are if one agency was given the wrong number, several agencies were so don't assume that just because you tell an agency that the number no longer belongs to John Doe that every other agency should automatically know.

You are WRONG. Disney sent me one time a bunch of stupid figurines of Disney characters in a box that I have never ever ordered from before. I TOLD THEM I HAVE NO CHILDREN; NO GRANDCHILDREN & NEVER ORDERED THESE ITEMS. Then, I told them if they wanted them back they can pay all postage, handling fees from ME for my time packaging them back up and my tape usage or send someone out to personally pick them up. WHY would I order this trash? They couldn't verify my order of these items and chose to "allow me to keep them instead" at which point I threw them in the trash. So don't tell me this sort of quirky stupid sales tactic doesn't happen. Yellow Pages online took it upon themselves 5 years ago to put our business on their listing and then had the audacity to send me a bill! I called them, argued with salesman, which said he had someone from our company on tape that subscribed. I said Really? Who is it? And I demanded to hear the tape. He then stuttered n stammered; then got his supervisor who then 'pretended' to be working on getting the tape............. tic tic tic moments later....... apologies couldn't find the 'mysterious' tape at which point I declared to the embecile that considering my husband & I were the ONLY two employees of our company..........................you, sir, are a very poor LIAR and if I receive ONE more call/memo/letter or WORD from you, I will contact the state Attorney General's office at which time you shall be sued, fined and possibly lose your license to operate in this state and I might add my state has the most 'aggressive' anti-business guy in the country serving this position.  ........ silence....................click............................haven't heard a peep since!!!

Many moons ago, X sent me a book that I did not order with an invoice. I called and yelled at them, they said they'd gotten my name from Business Week magazine (that I had a subscription to then) as a sales lead and arranged return shipment directly from my home after I told them I was keeping it (the law says unsolicited shipments are free gifts) if I had to lift a finger or pay a penny to return it. And the book seller was a legit business. 800notes is rife with complaints of scammers offering freebies to businesses like a dozen pens to try, ship like a 100 dozen of them followed by an invoice and claim the business had ordered them. You need to get out of your whiz cage and live in the real world for a change.

I think the state laws of the person who received the call would most likely apply on the subject of recorded phone calls. I say this because I think if a person would file a lawsuit, it would be filed in the state of residence of the person who received a call, not necessarily in Pen. In the state I live in, Georgia, as long as one person has knowledge of the recorded call, the recording is admissible in court. I don't the full ins and outs of this, but I think this may be the case. I'm not being critical but just offering a different perspective that could apply. I encourage everyone to look up the laws of their state regarding this. The individual;s attorney general's office would be a good place to start.

"You say they block their number. How did you get to this page then."I think blkcatmail meant that they block their name (I got "Not Provided" when they called me just a few minutes ago, and I came here through Google, looking up the number). When they call, if you pick up, do what Dee Dee says, BUT tell them that they need to only contact you in writing (there are some protections for companies that are just told to stop calling, without having other ways to communicate). It's a very good idea to send a letter (by certified mail, with receipt requested) stating that you want them to only contact you in writing - and, no, email doesn't count.THEN, once you have proof that they've received the letter, if they continue to call, they are in violation of the FDCPA; and you can go ahead and report them to their State Attorney General's Office. If you don't send the letter, they can always claim that you never told them to stop calling. Any judge might be inclined not to believe them, but you'd have no proof to say they were lying, so they could still get away with it.BTW - if anyone is thinking of recording their phone calls with Penn Credit, Pennsylvania requires all parties in the conversation know that a recording is being made, UNLESS a party does something illegal in that conversation. So, go ahead and record, but keep in mind that you probably won't be able to use that recording(s) unless they commit an illegal act while you're talking.

I've been getting calls from these clowns, too. I get the same computer messages (that are hilarious when the "computer" says my full name). OK, Folks. There are laws against this and I am a consumer advocate. Now here this ~ whether you owe money or not, is totally irrelevant. Please look up the Fair Credit Reporting Act which will tell you that if you tell the collector to never call back again because of the FCRA, that they are in violation of the Law. Then threaten to contact their State Attorney General's Office in PA. By law, they are allowed to contact you one more time, offering a final settlement. Don't accept a settlement. Don't waste your time by arguing over money. Simply follow through with your threat. Warn them for the last time, then immediately contact the SAG in PA. Most SAGs can be contacted via e-mail. Attach a link for him/her to this site. Penn has probably already violated the law with their calling methods. They are trying to circumvent knowledgeable consumer warnings. This is the solution and you must follow through with the SAG. I have used this Law before and my state's SAG came down hard on the creditor, who expressed a threat (also against FCRA). Fortunately, I was the spouse of a deadbeat. I wasn't the deadbeat. Anyway, you can use this with any collector. Keep in mind that many of these calls may be scams. In this sucking economy, con artists are crawling out of the woodwork. Remember that with any collector you must contact the SAG in THEIR state.

The other thing collection companies do is what is called a "reverse lookup".  Debt collectors look at old addresses and do a reverse lookup for the address and then call any telephone number associated with the address: even if the phone number has belonged to someone else for ten years!  (I know; I'm that person who gets the calls.)  Another thing debt collectors do is simply call any telephone number ever associated with the person who allegedly has a debt to see if there is a response and if the alleged debtor has returned to the number.  I have lived in this house for over ten years; I have had the same telephone number for fifteen years; I have had the same cell number since my first cell phone purchase; I still get calls for the same people who may have once lived in my house because my phone numbers are tied into the address.Last week, my neighbors were called to see if perchance one of them could get me to call back because the call was urgent.  My neighbor informed the caller that no such person had lived at that address for years.  We are still getting the calls.

800-900-1380

I know this is an old posting, but under the FDCPA a bill collector can not reveal information to anyone but the person who they are trying to reach. That is why the message will tell you not to listen or to hang up. The collection agency is covering their butt in case they reach a wrong person who does listen to the message. Bill collectors who "claim" to be decent, hardworking individuals just doing their jobs will find people with the same last name as yours in your area and hound them with phone calls hoping they will eventually reach the person the are looking for. Research the law and fight back at these people. If you are the wrong person, tell them not to call you again and if they continue to do so, document the calls and sue them. You can win a judgement of $1000 for harassment due to violating the rules of the Fair Debt Collection Protection Act.

The Do-Not-Call registry is a farce.  I have repeatedly reported the same company with the same number and the same human caller, and nothing has been done about it.  For over six months, I have received calls regarding lowering my credit card interest rates: I have no credit cards (thanks to Bill).  The Do-Not-Call registry is a waste of time and so is reporting it to its parent agency.  As for Penn Credit, I was called at 2045 hours on a Sunday.  That, to me, is intrusive.  I had no way to call back at the time as the recording says to call back during normal business hours.  So, how does one call back during normal business hours when its obvious that the company does not keep normal business hours.

I agree with the Gran on the go's post.  At 8pm I'm spending time with my family.  I, out of that normal curiosity, called them back, got a cheesy, (yes, I'm from Wisconsin), muzak music and someone finally came on the line and greeted me as Penn whatever...I asked her to repeat it and she did..I asked what the call was regarding, she said 'we handle personal business matters, please hold one moment Ma'am', sounded like she put me on hold when indeed she ended the call...I was a little irritated.  I called back to ask them to 'take my name off your list'  (which is ALL you have to say, and by law they HAVE to), but no one would pick up...the call just dropped so I can only assume they have caller ID.  I'll get 'em.  When an unwanted caller calls you for soliciting of any sort just do as I mentioned above and also get your numbers on the do-not-call lists...it really does help..Happy New Year Everyone!

Well this credit company, and I'm sure others, see this and fish for someone they have a debt on, because I get calls from them asking for a MELISSA Lastname, or MARK LastName...neither of which are my wife or I.

And the book seller was a legit business. 800notes is rife with complaints of scammers offering freebies to businesses like a dozen pens to try, ship like a 100 dozen of them followed by an invoice and claim the business had ordered them.

If I am reading Linda Malone's message correctly, she is not talking about THE phone company, but the company calling her and leaving the voicemail message that is disturbing to her. I don't blame her. Just the curiosity factor alone would make the recipient want to find out who in the heck is calling their number.

WHAT are you talking about?  She/He said, that Penn Corp has NO right to tell them to hang up the phone.  YOU are MORE THAN WRONG!  My guess is that you work as a lowlife collector & want people to feel intimidated by your worthless post.

The phone company does in fact have the right to dictate how the service they provide you is handled.  This includes but is not limited to saying, you can't call a specific number.

I keep getting automated phone calls asking me to identify myself after a brief moment of silence the caller will say by listening you will agree that listening to the message you are the person in question, and if not hangup now. I pay the phone bill, the company has no rights to tell me when to hang up the phone!. I don't want any phone calls I don't do business like that, everything I do is in writing.

Received a call asking for Erin (my wife) but when I called back they wanted to verify that this was Alex (me) calling them back.  Why would they leave a message for Erin and expect Alex to call them back?  I looked further into this and there have been numerous complaints about this company calling and harassing people for piddly amounts of money, usually under ninety dollars
